Shruti

  • Shruti is a young professional Data Science engineer from India.  Shruti is extremely gifted and slightly autistic, but she is naïve of US business

  • Some facial expressions, gesticulations and affect cues are ubiquitous across Cultures. However, differences in how we express ourselves non-verbally can create misunderstanding.

In Indian business culture, the traditional greeting is the "Namaste," where the palms are brought together at chest level with a slight bow.  If a handshake occurs, it is typically gentler compared to the firm handshakes expected in some Western cultures. A firm grip is not necessarily seen as a sign of confidence and can be perceived as aggressive.

  • Shruti develops a brilliant solution to her company’s biggest current challenge and she is asked to present her solution to a Boardroom full of American Businessmen.  She gets physically intimidated about how close everyone is sitting together and that everyone wants to shake her hand… firmly. Shruti’s Autistic profile includes tactile sensitivity and her background in Indian culture does not include firm handshakes.

SocialQ Bridges Cross-Cultural Barriers

  • Shruti prepares her presentation explaining solution. On her tablet, Shruti opens her SOCIALQ app. In Shruti’s SOCIALQ profile, she lists her desire to learn Western business culture and expands on her ASD profile, e.g.  “Difficultly With Non-Verbal Cues,” “Requires Adequate Personal Space,” “Has Difficultly with Social Context.”

  • Shruti is using a Language Learning App to learn English and her App APIs with SocialQ.  Now, while she is training with her English lessons, she is also learning about Facial Recognition and US Business Customs (e.g. shaking hands & boisterous behavior (men’s laughing) is normal).

  • Shruti uses the SocialQ application in her connected smart glasses and smart watch. Her SocialQ app detects facial expressions, learns Insights, and delivers personalized visual, audio and haptic Cues to Shruti.

Shruti - Social Q in Action

  • Shruti’s Smart Glasses scan the meeting room both in-person and on the Virtual participants’ laptop cameras. SocialQ analyzes all of the scenes and executes computer vision algorithms to detect Context (e.g. a traditional U.S. boardroom, businessmen in Western dress, boisterous greetings, etc.). In real-time, SocialQ displays an AR notification on Shruti’s glasses relating to American Corporate handshaking culture.

  • SocialQ integrates with multiple hardware modality. Here, Shruti’s SocialQ eco-system includes her computer, her smartphone, her Smart Glasses and Smart Watch. Haptic signals from SocialQ on her wrist primes Shruti with calming, warm, vibrations and her Glasses play soft, gentle audio in anticipation of an environment that she may be uncomfortable in.

  • While Shruti presents her solution to the boardroom and on-line, she highlights the Value Proposition for the company in the presentation….

This is the moment SocialQ was waiting for! Shruti receives an alert on the upper left portion of her glasses (indicating that the object(s) of the alert are far-away to the left). The alert notifies Shruti that a subset of the group (based on facial expression detection) are Laughing!

No need to fear, Shruti! Deep learning disambiguates the excitement as “joyful” excitement as opposed to laughs of ridicule at Shruti). Her Colleagues are impressed with her solution. Rather than becoming embarrassed at the laughter, Shruti continues and receives the recognition that she deserves.
